HYDRA
by John Molet - Novembre 2003

An other great band which should have got more success, but what can I say ? to me Hydra was one of the greatest southern rock bands in the seventies. Was it because of the success gained by Lynyrd SKynyrd, Molly Hatchet or 38 Special which let Hydra in the shadows ? We'll never know but as, today, we celebrate the bands which made it, why wouldn't we celebrate the Hydra's career, even if this was a real short one ! Everything starts back in 1974, they sign a contract with the Capricorn label and release their first album which would enjoy the southern rock fans. Well, for those who will be able to discover the band back then. Songs such as "Glitter queen" or "Good time man" were great ones and described the musical coluor of the band : nice guitars, great vocals, rich and inspired songs. One more great band in the southern family was our feelings at that time. Less than one year later, they released their second album, the fabulous "Land of money" and we were just blown away, the sound wes so great, the fans were real happy with this new album, the guitar parts by Wayne Bruce and Spencer Kirkpatrick were some of the greatest ones in the genre. This was just pure and magical moments with titles such as "Little miss rock’n roll", "Get back to the city", "Let the show go on" and "Take me for my music". Chuck Leavell will also work on this album. As many bands which didn't reach the top, Hydra would get the inevitable end event if they released a third album in 1977, "Rock the world". While listening to it, it seemed the inspiration was not there any more. There were good songs, "Wasting time", "Feel like running", or "Your love gets around" but it was their last attempt.

Hydra - 1974
