MOLLY HATCHET - NATCHEZ
LILLE (France) - DEC,10 2001

by John Molet

What ? Molly Hatchet in France ? Are you kidding me ? I can't belive it !!! I'm not kidding, while touring Europe, they perform in France for one gig. No promotion from the french rock press, only the fanzine "Band of Dixie" announced the vent. There were only 250 people in the lpace to see Molly Hatchet on stage. Without the fanzine's announce, only a few people would have been there. This show should have occured in L'Elysée Montmartre in Paris but the promoters move it to Lille. The reason ? not enough people for this kind of music....So, Molly Hatchet was there with only a few people, but as usual, they perform with the maximum energy !!!

So, let's go back to this trip. It was about 4pm when we arrived to the place ("Le Splendide"), and it was a surprise for us to be able to enter the place for the sound checks (thanks Arnault, from Verone Prod) and to chat a bit with Bobby Ingram, John Galvin and Phil Mc Cormack. They were really enthousiastic with us and agreed to take pictures for the fans and for the readers of "Band of Dixie", the fanzine, which they like very much. That is true southern hospitality !! and it leaves us memories. John Galvin will even stay with us during the Natchez soundcheck.

It was about 8:30pm when Natchez took the stage for a wonderful set. They're so happy to be there !! Imagine, open the show for one of your favorite band !!! A dream came true !!! Officially, Molly Hatchet was part of the "Europe Christmas Tour" with "Company of Snakes" and "Humble Pie", but as it was too expensive (???), only Molly Hatchet will perform in France, so Natchez opened for them.Natchez took the stage during 45 minutes to put an extraordinary show as Michel Krause said ("Bandanatchez" president, the Natchez official fan club). Phil Mc Cormack saw the show from the balcony and seemed to be really, really enthousiastic to this little french band (it is surely a great moment, isn't it Manu) . The setlist included mostly songs from their last album ("Brut") and some covers ("Up around the Bend" from CCR and "Crossroad" in a version really close to Lynyrd Skynyrd's).

It was about 10pm when ......"Would You please... from Jacksonville, Florida , Mooollyy Hatchet" and the shows starts with "Whiskey man" and "Heart of the USA". The legend is right here in front of us and despite the few hundred poeple in the audience, Molly Hatchet gives us their best.....Hats off sirs !!! The show is really close to the one they did almost a year ago in Ris-Orangis. "Gator country" ended with "Dixie", just before they asked a minute of silence, in respect for the victims of the Sept, 11th bombing. Will follow the Molly Hatchet's classics ("Beatin The Odds", "Dream's i'll never see", "Flirtin' With Disaster"). The audience will even sing on "Why Won't you take me home ?" during the first encore, song dedicated to Leon Wilkeson and Allen Collins. Phil Mc Cormack, during the show, will give a warm congratulation to the responsibles of the fanzine "Bands of Dixie" and Natchez for their great opening set. It's 11:30pm when the show ends. Molly Hatchet takes the road for Switzerland, the Netherlands and Germany (they 'll perform about 10 gigs over there) with "Company of Snakes" and Humble pie
