Enormous, Great, Fabulous, etc... so we can't find the right words to enjoy this wonderful ABB six shows serie, recorded for "Instant Live" in august 2003. I must say that when I put on the first cd for the first time, I got a great shock !! What a sound, what an intensity... Honestly, when you listen to such a level of quality, the official Live recordings seem to have a lack of power... and with these recordings, we can listen too the real Allman, with no commercial obligation, where they can feel free, where they can change a 8 minute song in a 20 or 30 minute creation depending to the moment, and where they can play extra songs like Layla, or different versions from Gamblers Roll, Patchwork Quilt, Soulshine, or In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, really great ! So, today as it's possible to find these recordings in the good shops in France, we think that we have to talk about these recordings on Road to Jacksonville.

First, we have to precise that each show is recorded on 3 cds, that's why there are 18 cds if you want to buy them all...but you can also choose your favourite shows, that's why you don't have to make a bank attack to get the money for the whole serie. So I can give you my favourite concerts, and first I think that the august 2003 the tenth concert, at the Raleigh, is the one that gave me the highest sensation, even if the others were good too... I think that this special concert is highly recommended to all the Allman Brothers fans, the way they play Gamblers Roll, Soulshine (Derek Trucks chorus !), Who's been talking, and Instrumental Illness (39 minutes) seem to come from outer space. I really enjoyed Pittsburgh show, recorded July 2003 the 26th, with hot versions from Trouble No More, Rockin' Horse and even In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, that was rarely played since Dickey Betts departure, and really great songs versions. That's how these live moments look like, and the choice was hard, because all the shows are at the top. It seems that these live recordings are some of the best testimony of the group, the sound is really unique, and the guitar parts, from Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes, show that they are really some of the greatest guitarists. Oteil B is a great bassist player, and the way Greg, Butch, Jaimoe and Marc play is really wonderful. It nice we could listen to Susan Tedeschi (Derek wife) and Karl Denson on saxophone. For history, it's great to know that "Instant Live" has just recorded ten 2004 concerts, and, as I got the opportunity to listen to one of them, I can tell and guarantee you that it was as good as the other ones !!! It will soon be hard for the money again !

This album is a new release from a difficult period for this legendary group. Some months ago, the Allman Brothers has just lost the man who is one of the great Southern Rock guitarist, Duane Allman, and that's why Dickey Betts is alone on guitar (that's very rare !) when they play at the beginning of 1972. We must admit that the man with the Stetson hat makes a great performance, and famous songs such as Statesboro Blues, Done Somebody Wrong, One Way Out, Midnight Riders, Hoochie Coochie Man... are well performed (how could it be different ?). Now this album is not indispensable but it is a real testimony from this difficult period in Brothers life, and for the real fans, for the people that do enjoy the group, it has no price !

Allman Brothers is surely at the present time one of the most prolific bands in the Southern buiseness, just think, hardly 6 months after the release of the live DVD "At The Beacon", fabulous it must be said, they offer a re-issue in CD with the same program, but of course, with some titles not appearing on the DVD ( Every hungry woman, Wasted Words, Trouble no more, Worried Down With The Blues, Good Morning Little School Girl) and others coming from an other concert (Statesboro Blues, Dream's, Whipping Post), not fool the guys !! The fans shall draw upon one's savings, .. right, they will be excused so remarkable is the quality of this double album (ou disk), but how could it be differently with people of this musical level; then, what say more which has not been told upon this band ? If we make an effort to find something, perhaps can we state that Derek Trucks has rejoined the master (Warren Haynes) for the Slide guitar expression (Old Before My Time), but is that the most important ? For me and regreting Dickey Betts, I must admit that this line up has certainly offered the music the most rich in sound that the ABB had ever produced before. Great !

What else can I say on this great album which hasn't been yet said or written ? That's what I first wondered when I first introduced the cd in my reader. From the very first note of the intro of "Statesboro blues", I laid down on my couch, with a glass of bourbon and I let the music play. It reminded me that great period, the 70's, and I must admit I enjoyed these memories but the problem was I couldn't write anyting down regarding this album. So I went on the second title, but the problem was still there ! What graet music it is, it's been such a logn time since I listened to the Allman in this preiod but it is just such great music. And what about the great Duane ! ANd I was still laid down in my couch and still couldn't write anything down. After the intro of "Done somebody wrong", I knew I wouldn't write a single word, this music just have to be listened to. So I took an other shot of bourbon and I let the music play to the end of the cd. For sure, this was one of the greatest moments of the southern rock blues, but I'm sure you already knew it !

We're quite happy this year with the Allman Brothers Band : after the releases of "S.U.N.Y at Stonybrook" and the fabulous "Hittin' the note", we got the chance to get this DVD recorded on march 25th and 26th, 2003, during the "annual Beacon run". We quite easily got the sound tapes from all the concerts of the 2003 run, but now we have the footage with a great quality sound. What a great spectacle to be able to see a band who seems to be real happy on stage, giving us their best with this group effort we hadn't seen with them for a long time. The dual guitar players, Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks, is just fantastic with no one trying to make it his own, they're just complementary with their own style, which adds a lot to the ABB"s music. The setlist is just great and we have most of the tunes friom their last album, "Hittin' the note". The second DVD, gives you access to real interesting interviews and to a very nice version of "Old friend" by Derek and Warren in the dressing room. Wee, what a great moment ! I would have liked to get one more song on this DVD, their version of "Layla", but may be there's a problem with the copyrights ?

It seems the year 2003 is just an exceptional year for the Allman Brothers, speaking of album releasing. We got earlier this year the great "Hittin' the note". We now have this 1971 recording release while waiting for the "1790 Atlanta Pop Festival" due to come out in the next couple of weeks, and later this fall, the DVD recorded last march during the famous and traditional "Beacon run" (unfortunately, their version of "Layla" won't be in the released package). But let's go back to this '71 recordings. Of course, the quality of the sound isn't extraordinary (I feel the sound is a bit , but muffled), but on the other hand, what a great performance by the Brothers we have. It seems they were at their top this day, and I believe I didn't hear Duane so inspired (his guitar solo on "Blue Sky" is just marvellous, and some of his licks remind me of Dickey Betts). What a great recording we have here ! Let's hope they'll be able tp put their hands on other such interesting tapes !

I must admit I didn't really know what to expect when I received the new album from the Allman Brothers. In fact, I was afraid of this album to sound a bit like a Gov't Mule album. Warren Haynes is an important character in the band, and with the production of Warren and Michael Barbiero (Gov't Mule producer), it was kind of legitimate to have this interrogation. But, I was wrong, this album is an Allman Brothers album, with its own sound. Of course, some will have regrets with the missing of the country influences from Dickey Betts, but as Gregg Allman often says in his interviews : "country is gone, and we're back in deep blues'. And this is not the traditional blues, this is the great blues by the Allman Brothers, with its magical and unique sound. It starts with the first cut, the blues-rock "Firing line", where Warren and Derek shows us their ability in playing slide guitar. "High cost of low living" shows us all the musical and melodic aspect of the Warren's guitar playing. I could go on like that for hours with this new album which didn't leave my cd player since I received it. What can I say about the great "Old before my time", a nice ballad like the ones the Allman Brothers always wrote, about the version of "Heart of stone" (written by the Rolling Stones) where ABB added their sound and their identity to the song, about the Freddy King's cover, "Woman across the river" where Warren shows us what he learned from one of his masters, about the great "Instrumental illness" where our two guitar players show their talent and where Derek adds a more rock and aggressive aspect to his playing, etc, etc....You understood that I really fell in love with this new release from the Brothers which everyone should have a listen to it.

Being a die-hard fan of the Allman Brothers Band, it's always with such a great emotion I'm having their new album in my hands. And it's of course with a great emotion when this album is a live recording from the original lineup (it's not the new studio release everybody's waiting for such a long time…). In fact, this performance has been recorded almost 4 months before the great "Fillmore East" album, and delivers us a set list a bit different from the Fillmore's album, event if 4 songs were on the Fillmore). The sound, of course, has been reworked but is still close to the original one and close to the Fillmore's one. The order of the songs has been changed but it's still such a great pleasure to hear the most popular six strings duelling guitars.
Let's note this album will only be available at the ABB's shows and on their website. I've been a bit disappointed by the fact the Duane's solo on the most beautiful blues "Stormy Monday" has been cut, the tape stopped running while recording. Anyway, this album has to be in every ABB fan's hands !!!
