Hurry Sundown's interview
by Philippe Archambeau - December 2003

Did you take this name as a tribute to the Outlaws ?

Jeb and Scott : We really liked the name - we feel like it fits us, and at the same time we feel like it's a bit of a salute to the Outlaws.

How was Hurry Sundown born ?
Scott : I put out an ad for a bass player and Jeb responded. He had met John in another band, and we found Ryan at an open jam.

Can you introduce the band ?
Scott Casteel : lead vocals, guitar
John Tiefry : guitar, vocals
Ryan Reichard : drums
Jeb Shelton : bass guitar, vocals

Do you all have the same influences, tastes, and desires ?
Jeb : We all come from different musical backgrounds, but we all share a taste for Southern Rock and of course, we all have the same desire to have our music heard.

Who influenced your style while growing up ? and now ?
Scott : Definitely Toy Caldwell as well as Dickey Betts. Jeb : When I was young, I enjoyed the flashy players like Chris Squire and Geddy Lee, and as I've grown I've learned to appreciate the more foundational players. I would say guys like Leon Wilkeson and Mars Cowling cover both angles. I really draw from that.
John : I dig the Skynyrd guitarists, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Michael Schenker....
Ryan : John Bonham, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Bros.

How would you categorize your music ?
Scott and Jeb : We hate that question. It's rock and roll....but if you hear something else, that's cool too.

Can you tell us about the recording process for your album, and who wrote the songs ?
Scott : It was recorded at my parents house on a digital hard disk recorder. Jeb and I wrote the words and the initial chord progressions, but the finished songs are a group effort. Some of the songs were written before we recorded, and others were composed in the studio.

Do you live by the music ?
Jeb : None of us have day jobs. This is all we do.

Is it easy to play this kind of music in the States ?
Scott and Jeb : We have nowhere else to compare it to, but it generally goes over pretty well here.

Did you already open for a "major" band ?
Scott : We've opened for some bands and we had a blast. That's always cool.

What do you wish for the future of Hurry Sundown ?
Scott : Just to go as far as we can.

Except music what are your interests ?
Scott : Fishing and working on old cars.
Jeb : Billiards, fishing, watching college football
John : Fishing, art
Ryan: Billiards, paintball, yoga.

If you had to spend the rest of your life on a desert island, which albums would you take ?
Scott : (self-titled) Pure Prairie League, a self-made compilation of Outlaws / Eagles / Poco / Marshall Tucker / Gram Parsons
Jeb : "Street survivors (Lynyrd Skynyrd), Makin' magic (Pat Travers), Operation mindcrime (Queensryche), Come Taste the band (Deep Purple), What's going on (Marvin Gaye)
Ryan : Eat a peach
